When you find yourself in a foreign country, it is useful to be able to say the basic phrases in the native language, so that local people could understand what you need when you ask them. Afterwards, they may try to explain you everything with the help of gestures and this will be sufficient, but you have to know how to ask most common questions and give the most wide spread answers.
Below are provided phrases and sentences in Greek. The sound ‘e’ in the words that follow is read as in the English word ‘egg’ and the sound ‘th’ as in ‘this’. The syllable, upon which the emphasis falls, is underlined.
Greetings in Greek
kalimera – good morning (salutation used when coming to a place or leaving it)
kalispera – good afternoon / good evening
kalinihta – good bye (farewell salutation used in the evening or at night)
herete – hello (greeting used between 10:00 and 14:00)
yassou – hello / goodbye (salutation to one person or a friend)
yassas – hello / goodbye (salutation to two or more people or a more formal and polite greeting to an unknown person)
adio – goodbye
